Assoc Prof Alexander Hodge

Alexander Hodge originally hails from Vancouver Canada but has resided in Australia since 2000.

​

Assoc Prof Hodge worked as a molecular biologist in Canada before he commenced medicine at The University of Sydney. He graduated with honours, then completed his gastroenterology specialist training between Canberra and Melbourne at The Alfred Hospital.  As a junior doctor, he was foundationally involved in the seminal paper demonstrating the association between adiponectin levels and inflammation severity in fatty liver disease. Since that time in 2004, he has been steadily involved in clinical and basic science research.  In 2015 he completed a PhD at Monash University investigating the use of human amniotic epithelial cells as treatment of liver fibrosis and a clinical trial utilizing fasting as a management strategy for fatty liver disease (now called MASLD).

 

His abstract on fasting garnered significant media attention as did a publication on the association between coffee consumption and fibrosis. This coffee research enabled him to present at an international liver conference and was featured in 48 newspapers and 95 TV / radio segments internationally and throughout Australia. Following the completion of his PhD, he was employed as a gastroenterologist at Monash Health and was awarded the Inaugural Early Career Research Award in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

 

Assoc Prof Hodge is active in supervision of medical student and gastroenterology trainee projects, as well as supervise his own PhD students through Monash University. He reviews investigator-initiated research for 2 local journals and has been called upon to mark PhD theses for University of NSW students.

 

As of 2023 he has overseen 15 Pharma-sponsored clinical trials through Monash University as the principal investigator. His interest in fatty liver and my previous media exposure has led to 17 invited talks, 2 Presidential Posters of Distinction at international conferences and advisory board membership for a pharmacology company.  Since 2017 he has worked as a contractor for an Asia Pacific contract research organization where he advises, reviews and assists on multiple set-up biotechnology companies on clinical trial set-up. In mid 2022, he started part-time consulting as medical advisor for a South Korean biotechnology company assisting in the development and oversight of medication trials for a novel liver disease treatments.   

 

Assoc Prof Hodge has an Honorary Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of The Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University and Honorary Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of The Faculty of Medicine at Monash University. 

 

Assoc Prof Hodge is a currently a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Eastern Health where he attends gastroenterology and hepatology clinics, manages inpatients and is on-call for emergency endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy).

 

He also privately consults in Clayton and Frankston (including FibroScan®) and has admitting rights Box Hill Hospital, Maroondah Hospital, Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, Mulgrave Hospital and The Bays Hospital.  He performs endoscopic procedures at Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, Mulgrave Hospital, Chesterville Day Hospital and The Bays Hospital and in the public system through Eastern Health.
